    The P-1 visa is a temporary work visa category in the U.S. for a person who is coming to the U.S. to perform services as:

    a) an individually recognized athlete; or
    b) as a member of an internationally recognized athletic team or entertainment group;
    c) or as an artist or entertainer individually or as part of a group under a reciprocal exchange or culturally unique program.

    To qualify, the athlete or entertainment group member requires a U.S.-based sponsor (employer or agent), a written contract or summary of the terms and conditions of employment, and must demonstrate recognized achievements.

    The athlete or athletic team must have a tendered contract with a major U.S. sports league, team or in an individual sport commensurate with international recognition in that sport.

    P-1A Athlete

    For the P-1 visa an individual athlete must have an internationally recognized reputation as an international athlete or be a member of a foreign team that is internationally recognized. 

    P-1A Athletic Team

    For the P-1 visa an athletic team must have achieved international recognition as a unit in the sport and each member is accorded classification based on the international reputation of the team.

    International Recognition Criteria:

    Qualification for the P-1 visa by an individual athlete or athletic team may be proven with two of the following:

    1. U.S. Sports League Participation: Past participation to a significant extent in a prior season with a major U.S. sports league;

    2. National Team Participation: Past participation in international competition with a national team;

    3. U.S. Intercollegiate Participation: Past participation to a significant extent in a prior season for a U.S. college or university in intercollegiate competition;

    4. Official Statement: A written statement from an official of the governing body of the sport which details how the alien or team is internationally recognized;

    5. Expert Opinion: A written statement from a member of the sports media or a recognized expert in the sport which details how the alien or team is internationally recognized;

    6. Ranking: Ranking if the sport has international rankings; or

    7. Awards: Receipt of a significant honor or award in the sport.

    P-1B Entertainment Group

    An entertainment group:

    a) Must have been established for at least one year; and

    b) 75% of the members must have been performing entertainment services for the same for at least one year

    c) Needs an appropriate peer consultation or advisory opinion(s); and

    d) Must establish that it has been internationally recognized as outstanding in the discipline for a sustained and substantial period of time.

    International Recognition Criteria:

    Qualification for a P-1 visa by an entertainment group may be proven with nomination or receipt of significant international awards or prizes for outstanding achievement in the field or with three of the following evidence:

    1. Starring/Lead Participant in Distinguished Events: The group has performed and will perform as a starring or lead participant in distinguished productions or events;

    2. Major Publications: The group has achieved international recognition and acclaim for outstanding achievement as evidenced by reviews in major published material;

    3. Lead/Starring Group for Distinguished Organizations/Establishments: The group has performed and will perform services as a leading or starring group for distinguished organizations and establishments;

    4. Record of major commercial or critically acclaimed successes;

    5. Significant Recognition: The group has achieved significant recognition for achievements from organizations, critics, government agencies or other recognized experts in the field; or

    6. High Salary: The group has either commanded or will command a comparatively high salary or other substantial remuneration.

    P-1S Support Personnel

    The P-1S visa is a temporary work visa category in the U.S. for essential support staff that seeks to accompany a P-1 athlete, P-1 athletic team or P-1 entertainment group.

    The P-1S requires:

    1. Consultation: A consultation from a labor organization with experience in the field;

    2. Essentiality Statement: A statement about prior essentiality, critical skills and experience with the principal applicant individual or group; and

    3. Contract: A written contract or summary of terms and conditions of the employment agreement.
